Thompson is een Britse professor Politieke Economie en auteur van het invloedrijke boek Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century. Ze is expert op vlak van energie en geopolitiek. Waren fossiele brandstoffen al altijd een kwestie van internationale strijd, dan zal dit met de transitie naar hernieuwbare energie niet anders zijn. Energie zal bepalend blijven voor geopolitiek. De energietransitie naar hernieuwbare energie is volgens Thompson zonder meer revolutionair te noemen. Over een periode van dertig jaar zullen we de volledige energiebasis van de moderne beschaving hertekenen. Hernieuwbare energiebronnen vereisen heel wat metalen, die vooral in sommige gebieden van de wereld zoals China vlot voorhanden zijn. Dat brengt nieuwe verhoudingen in de wereldpolitiek met zich mee.

Thompson is a British professor of Political Economy and author of the influential book Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century. She is an expert in the field of energy and geopolitics. If fossil fuels have always been a matter of international struggle, the transition to renewable energy will be no different. Energy will continue to define geopolitics. According to Thompson, the energy transition to renewables can be described as revolutionary. Over a period of 30 years, we will redraw the entire energy base of modern civilisation. Renewable energy sources require a lot of metals, which are readily available in some parts of the world, such as China. This brings with it new relationships in world politics.
