Jason Hickel is economisch antropoloog die onderzoek doet naar ongelijkheid en ecologische economie vanuit een mondiaal perspectief. In zijn boek Minder is Meer legt Hickel uit hoe economische groei en kapitalisme de klimaatverandering en ecologische ineenstorting niet kunnen oplossen, aangezien ze deze crises eigenlijk veroorzaken. Hij inspireert met een duidelijk pad naar een postkapitalistische economie. Een economie die rechtvaardiger, zorgzamer en leuker is. Een economie die mensen laat floreren en de ecologische ineenstorting omkeert. Want door minder te nemen, kunnen we meer worden.

De visie van Hickel vormt een uitdaging voor bedrijven in de industriële sector. Hoe denkt de sector over de transitie? Ziet de sector kansen in het verhaal van degrowth?

Thomas Leysen is voorzitter van Umicore (voorheen Union Minière) en Mediahuis en is tevens voorzitter van de raad van bestuur van Royal DSM. Hij was ook voorzitter van het Verbond van Belgische Ondernemingen (tot 2008) en van de Commissie Corporate Governance (tot 2023).

Jason Hickel and Thomas Leysen will discuss the future of our economy. It promises to be an interesting conversation.

Jason Hickel is an economic anthropologist researching inequality and ecological economics from a global perspective. In his book Less is More Hickel explains how economic growth and capitalism are unable to solve climate change and ecological collapse since they are actually causing these crises. He inspires with a clear path to a post-capitalist economy. An economy that is more just, caring and fun. An economy that allows people to flourish and reverses ecological collapse. Because by taking less, we can become more.

Hickel’s vision poses a challenge to companies in the industrial sector. How does the sector think about the transition? Does the sector see opportunities in the story of degrowth?

Thomas Leysen is Chairman of Umicore (formerly Union Minière) and Mediahuis and is also Chairman of the Board of Royal DSM. He was also Chairman of the Verbond van Belgische Ondernemingen (Federation of Enterprises in Belgium) (until 2008) and of the Commissie Corporate Governance (until 2023).
